A national symbol steeped in history

Chile's flag, also known as "La Estrella Solitaria" (The Lone Star), was adopted in 1817. It consists of two horizontal stripes of unequal size; the upper stripe is white and the lower stripe is red. In the upper left corner, on a blue background, is a white five-pointed star. The white represents the snow-capped peaks of the Andes, the blue symbolizes the sky and the Pacific Ocean, the red recalls the blood shed for independence, and the star represents the nation's guiding state.
