The flag of North Macedonia, adopted in 1995, features a vibrant red sun with eight rays extending from the center on a red background. The design is inspired by the Vergina Sun, found in the royal tombs of the ancient kingdom of Macedonia, which is also an important symbol for Greece. The flag was chosen to represent the nation's aspirations for a distinct identity and new direction following its independence from Yugoslavia in 1991.
