The flag of Malaysia, also known as the "Jalur Gemilang" (Stripes of Glory), features fourteen red and white horizontal stripes representing the thirteen member states and the federal government. The blue canton in the upper left-hand corner symbolizes the unity of the peoples of Malaysia and bears a fourteen-pointed yellow star, reflecting the same entities as the stripes. Yellow is the royal color of Malaysia. Adopted in 1950, the flag symbolizes hope, courage and respect, while the design is inspired by that of the United States.
