A national symbol steeped in history

The flag of Brazil, adopted in 1889 after the proclamation of the republic, is composed of a green field representing the Brazilian forests and a yellow lozenge symbolizing the country's mineral wealth. In the center of the lozenge, a blue sphere is decorated with 27 white stars, each representing a Brazilian state and the federal district, arranged like the sky over Rio de Janeiro on November 15, 1889. The white band across the sphere bears the national motto: "Ordem e Progresso" (Order and Progress), inspired by positivist ideals.
