Characteristics of the Spanish flag

A national symbol steeped in history

The flag of Spain, officially adopted in 1981, consists of three horizontal stripes: red, yellow and red, the yellow stripe being twice as wide as each red stripe. The hoist (left) side contains the national coat of arms, comprising a series of heraldic elements representing the various historical kingdoms of Spain, as well as a column on each side flanked by a crown and the "Plus Ultra" emblem.
