A national symbol steeped in history

The current flag of Syria was adopted in 1980 and is a return to the flag used from 1958 to 1961, when the United Arab Republic, comprising Egypt and Syria, existed. It features three horizontal stripes of red, white and black, with two green stars in the white stripe. The colors are those of pan-Arabism, symbolizing the unity and independence of the Arab peoples. The green stars represent Syria and Egypt.
